Segregation will occur if the constituent particles of a material differ in some physical property and have freedom to travel on separate paths during movement of the bulk. The degree to which it occurs and the importance of the resulting lack of homogeneity can adversely affect both the plant performance and the ultimate value of the product. Segregation is accumulative, so the total route of the material through the plant must be considered.
